SOMERSET, NJ - As Independence Day approaches, the Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department is reminding residents of the dangers associated with fireworks and urging them to prioritize safety. The Township's official fireworks display is set for July 3rd at the Municipal Complex, and the department encourages residents to attend rather than set off their own fireworks.
For those who choose to use fireworks at home, following safety guidelines and using only legal fireworks in New Jersey is crucial. The department emphasizes the importance of purchasing permitted Sparkling Devices and Novelties from reputable sources and ensuring the packaging is intact and untampered.
Follow Instructions: Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions when using fireworks.
Supervision: Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers, which can reach temperatures of about 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and cause severe burns.
Avoid Impairment: Do not use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Consider Weather Conditions: Refrain from using fireworks in very windy or dry conditions.
Be Prepared: Keep a charged garden hose or bucket of water nearby in case of a fire or other mishap.
Wear Protection: Use eye protection when lighting fireworks.
Light Safely: Light fireworks one at a time and move back quickly to a safe distance.
Handle Malfunctions Properly: Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Instead, soak them with water and discard them.
Maintain Safe Distance: Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after.
Respect Others: Never point or throw fireworks, including sparklers, at any person, animal, or building.
Dispose Safely: After fireworks have burned out, wait at least 20 minutes before soaking the devices with water. Follow disposal directions on the fireworks and keep the device at least five feet away from combustibles before discarding in a trash can the following morning.
Fire prevention officials stress that adhering to these guidelines can prevent accidents and ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday. Residents are encouraged to contact the Franklin Township Fire Prevention Department or visit the Township’s website for more information on fireworks safety.
Enjoy the holiday safely and responsibly by attending the public fireworks display or following all recommended precautions if using legal fireworks at home.
