Franklin, Southampton electoral candidates named

The registrars in Southampton County and the city of Franklin have released their lists of qualified candidates appearing on the ballots for local elections this November, and the only races with candidates running opposed are for a Southampton County School Board seat, the Newsoms mayoral seat and a Boykins Town Council seat.

Voters will have the opportunity to write in a name if they opt not to select a candidate that became qualified to appear on the ballot.

SCHOOL BOARD

Natalie Dever King and Sitrina B. Pope will be on the ballot this fall as they run for the at-large seat on the Southampton County School Board.

MAYOR

Vanless “VD” Worrell and Stephanie Ellsworth-Cofield are running for mayor in the town of Newsoms.

In the city of Franklin, Paul E. Kaplan will be the candidate on the ballot for the mayoral seat.

In the towns of Southampton County, Cletis W. Lassiter is running for mayor in Boykins, Nick Kitchen is running for mayor in Capron, Danny R. Williams is running for mayor in Courtland, and Tara Kea is running for mayor in Ivor.

FRANKLIN CITY COUNCIL

In Franklin, Ward 4 Councilman Dr. Linwood W. Johnson III and Ward 1 Councilman Mark R. Kitchen are running for reelection to their respective seats.

Richard “Ricky” S. Grizzard is running to be elected to the Ward 2 seat currently occupied by Ray Smith.

BOYKINS TOWN COUNCIL

There are five seats available on the Boykins Town Council and seven candidates: Linda Beatty, Janice Boone, Dee Modlin Clary, Freddie Felts, Laura A. Parr, Robert “Chet” Poland and Nickolas B. Zinn.

The five seats will go to the five candidates receiving the most votes.

CAPRON TOWN COUNCIL

There are six seats available on the Capron Town Council and only five candidates: Ronald Carr Jr., Allene S. Edwards, Timothy Futrell, Phillip C. McGee and Reginald Vaughan.

For anyone interested in mounting a write-in campaign to win the sixth available seat, Southampton County Registrar Lynn Burgess said they should visit the county’s office of voter registration located at 22305 Main St. in Courtland.

“They should come to my office here, and I’ll have a packet of information for them to conduct a write-in campaign,” Burgess said. “This person would have to live within the town limits and be a qualified candidate for a Town Council position.”

COURTLAND TOWN COUNCIL

Wards A, B and C in Courtland are each represented by two seats on the Courtland Town Council, and each has a candidate running for them. Shameka M. Key and Perry Goodwyn are running for the Ward A seats, Michael J. Vaughan and Jason C. Fowler are running for the Ward B seats, and Louanne Jones Davis and Jacob Maffei are running for the Ward C seats.

IVOR TOWN COUNCIL

There are four seats available on the Ivor Town Council, and there are four candidates: Roland Britt, Clifton Merrell Carr Jr., B. Frank Cook and Megan B. Demsko.

NEWSOMS TOWN COUNCIL

There are six seats available on the Newsoms Town Council, and there are six candidates: John Barham Carter, Diane Dovell, Raymond Neil Drake, Damian P. Dwyer, Carol Drake Majors and Pete T. Twisdale II.
