FREDERICK, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A new project called “The Sites of Enslavement Project” is coming to Frederick, and it will share the daily lives of enslaved African Americans who once lived in the city.

“We knew that we had to do a specialized project narrowing down the specific history of sites before emancipation, documenting and researching those sites and rediscovering their lost history,” Christina Martinkosky said.

The project will look at locations around Frederick connected to slavery.

Christina Martinkosky, a historic preservation planner for the city, says the project will identify these significant locations so they are properly preserved and not lost to development.

“We do hope that it’s a very personal experience for people, and we hope that it relays the truth that hasn’t been fully expressed yet,” Martinkosky explained. “So it’s an exciting project, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it comes out.”

The city’s alderman has approved the project, but it is seeking additional funding.
