FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A CSX Freight Train derailed Saturday night, causing damage to garage buildings at Cobblestone Square in Fredericksburg.

At around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, the Fredericksburg Police Department’s E-911 Center received a call about a train derailment.

At 8:54 p.m., police officers and the fire department arrived at Cobblestone Square, located at 420 Cobblestone Drive, and found that a CSX Freight Train had derailed and collided with a large wall near garage buildings on the property.

According to officials, CSX was notified to stop all freight and commuter rail traffic in both directions, and property maintenance for Cobblestone was contacted.

Officials said the property is separated from the train tracks by a large wall located behind the garage buildings. Five cars of the CSX Freight Train had derailed and crashed into the large wall, causing it to collapse into four garages, with one garage being “completely flattened.”

Additionally, two vehicles and a motorcycle were damaged.

According to a spokesperson for Fredericksburg Police Department, there were no injuries as the train had no passengers on board. The Fire Department conducted a preliminary search of the area and did not find anyone injured as well.

Although hazardous materials were found on the train car, officials say they were secure and were not part of the derailed cars.

As of the morning of Sunday, July 21, two of the five derailed cars have been removed, with the other three expected to be removed Sunday as well.

According to officials, the City of Fredericksburg has been in contact with CSX, the Federal Railroad Administration and the property management of Cobblestone, and will continue to monitor and evaluate the incident.

In a statement shared with 8News, City of Fredericksburg Fire Chief Michael Jones said City Planning and Building officials will assist Cobblestone management as they stabilize, demolish and rebuild from this event.

According to police, CSX will be taking over the investigation.
