    Beloved retired fire chief passes away

    FREDONIA, Pa. (WKBN) — A retired fire chief of Fredonia died Friday morning, according to Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page.

    Greenville native George Benninghoff, 85, served as fire chief for more than 50 years. He died peacefully at Avalon Springs Place in Mercer, Pennsylvania.

    The Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department shared the news of Benninghoff’s passing on social media. The post said, “He is a legend that Fredonia is proud of”.

    According to his obituary , Benninghoff was involved in the Fredonia community and beyond. He was a social member at the American Legion Post #919.

    The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fredonia Presbyterian Church on Water Street. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, July 30 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
