The 2024 Sheriff Youth Week began on July 8th and the class graduated from the event-filled program on July 12th.

Monmouth County's Sheriff Youth Week program offers a unique opportunity for young people to explore their interests in law enforcement through police academy-style training, drill and exercise programs and instructional sessions at the Monmouth County Police Academy, 2000 Kozloski Road, Freehold, NJ.

Participants begin early and at attention at 7:45 am each day, and many hands-on interactive programs fill the time, as well as classroom learning, with each day wrapping up at 4:00 pm.

Sheriff's Youth Week is free of charge and open to all Monmouth County residents of high school age - which means those who just graduated from 8th grade and are going into high school in September, those already in high school or anyone who just graduated from high school.

Students provided a completed physical form once their application was approved, and a background check was successfully completed.

Each day's session began with drill instruction and ended with one hour of physical training. Recruits are taught by municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The programs provide hands-on activities with a variety of first responder experiences. Perhaps what provides the most value to the youth is the intensive amount of time shared together in person without the distraction of electronic mobile devices. The teens had the opportunity to immerse themselves in interactive activities with one another, working independently, in small groups, and as a team.

On day 2 of the program, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden commented, "It was an exciting morning at the Monmouth County Fire Academy for Sheriff Youth Week recruits as they got a firsthand look into the rigorous training and dedication it takes to become a firefighter. They toured the smoke house, learned how to handle a hose and climbed the ladder." Golden continued, "Thank you to Director of Fire Services/Fire Marshal Fred Migliacco and his staff for guiding the recruits and providing them with an experience that exemplifies commitment and teamwork."

Smart diet and exercise habits were encouraged and practiced throughout the week.

Among many of the week's highlights, in addition to the Fire Academy experience, the recruits had the opportunity to learn about first aid response, learning CPR and more... They shared time at the STARS facility, a virtual reality experience that members of law enforcement train in, and had a physical training day at the Monmouth County Police Academy. They experienced Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, learned about firearm safety, motor vehicle stops, K-9 and Project Lifesaver, as well as Drone Demos, and more!

The event wrapped up on the 12th with an exciting graduation ceremony, celebration and send off!
