FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — It is officially fair season across the Stateline and Stephenson County kicked the season off at the Fairgrounds in Freeport on Tuesday.

The smells, sounds and tastes of county fairs are memorable and those at the Stephenson County Fair said it’s much more than that. It’s historic and business-friendly.

“I love to be able to be at the Stephenson County Fair to share my wonderful products and give back to the fair,” Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics Jeanette Murray said. “I love the idea of seeing people and connecting with people and being with them. 40 some years I’ve been to this fair.”

Murray said her local business looks forward to the fair every year and being able to show off her work comes with many benefits.

“It gives us a chance to expand our business through the public and to expose ourselves,” Murray said.

Bill Bradsher of Wild Bill’s Smokin’ Stuff in Rockford said the fair is special to him because it is where connections are made.

“We really enjoy Stephenson County Fair because everything’s so laid back,” Bradsher said. “It’s not as congested, so you can spend more time talking to customers and enjoying people’s company.”

One long-time fair attendee said the event is crucial for the future of local businesses.

“I think it’s beneficial to help get the word out about their businesses,” Sheila Keene said. “People might see them driving by in town, but maybe don’t stop. This is a good way for them to know what that business is all about and maybe stop and support them in the future.”

Murray said for her, the fair is a representation of home.

“I grew up in this community, so it {the fair} just has a special place for me,” Murray said. “It’s just fun to be a part of a local event.”
