Commissioners learn rules to qualify for FEMA reimbursement
Freestone County Emergency Management Coordinator Leonard Smith briefed the county court members at their June 27 meeting on the status of the county’s emergency declaration for the extended extreme rain period that ran from April 26 to June 5. “FEMA will cover 75 percent; we have to cover 25 percent,’’ Smith told the court. “However, that 25 percent isn’t us monetarily putting anything out per se. Two closures coming to Freestone County starting July 15
FAIRFIELD, Freestone County — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced closures coming to Freestone and Leon Counties beginning on Monday, July 15. Starting at 7 a.m. that day, the I-45 northbound and southbound rest areas will be closed in order to remove and replace the current roadway. TxDOT says the closure will run through the end of the month and reopen at the start of August. Signage will be placed in advance of the area where the road work is being conducted.

Growing up along the Gulf Coast of Texas (my family home was only 30 minutes from Galveston Island) this time of year always spelled one daunting reality, hurricanes. Even as I type this a tropical system (Hurricane Beryl) is bearing down on the people of Houston, while we here in Freestone County celebrate some days of lower temperatures and much-needed rain. County may purchase security cameras for new Tax Office
, , Freestone County commissioners met July 3 and discussed purchasing security cameras for the new Tax Office. Dan Cerroni, an account executive with a company called Verkada, gave a presentation on the Verkada security camera system to be used for the new tax office, and possibly to be used in other areas of the county later; and the price of the system. Ninety-five percent of their issues are resolved remotely, Cerroni said, and the company responds by phone within 30 seconds. Support is included in the price.
