FRENCHTOWN TWP. — Monroe County deputies responding to a call about shots being fired Friday night in Frenchtown Township arrested a man they reported as having a loaded handgun and being intoxicated.

Deputies were dispatched at about 10:45 p.m. to the area of Eighth Street and Venice Road in the Stony Point subdivision after receiving calls about shots being fired, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported.

While at the scene, deputies heard several additional gunshots and located a man and woman walking in the immediate area, Goodnough said in a news release. The man, a 39-year-old from Newport, was found to have a loaded 9 mm handgun concealed in his waistband. He did not possess a license to carry the pistol concealed. He also was found to be intoxicated while in possession of the handgun. Additionally, evidence of shots being fired in the area was located.

It was noted that during this incident there was a lot of vehicle and foot traffic in the area due to a fireworks display occurring in a nearby neighborhood, Goodnough said.

The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Jail on the firearm violations. His identity was not immediately released.

Deputy Brent Thomas is investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7511.
