The British are coming (for your favorite award sweet spots), maximizing Platinum, dumping Gold, and more [Week in Review]
It is probably a coincidence that both major British airlines destroyed sweet spots long enjoyed by North American members during the week in which we celebrate the anniversary of our independence. However, you didn’t need to depend on those programs to get great value, so this week we cover how you can break free from those now-dead sweet spots, how you can maximize the value you get from your Platinum card, why you shouldn’t take a siesta on Sonesta, and a lot more.

Something to Savor: A reason to dump the Gold?
A few days ago, a moment I’d long been waiting for finally arrived: I was finally offered the chance to product change an old card to the Capital One SavorOne card. I am thrilled to finally have that card in my household even if the physical replacement card isn’t yet off the presses, but the addition of the SavorOne to my wallet begs the question: will I finally dump the Amex Gold card?
British Airways kills redemptions on AA and Alaska (again for the very first time)
Evidently, they’re still a little sore about the whole Independence Day thing on the other side of the pond. Overnight, British Airways seems to have completely destroyed its award chart for flights on AA and Alaska Airlines within the US, in some cases raising prices by almost 50%. BA already took a mallet to those awards in late-2023, so domestic US flights under 3,000 miles now cost between 50-100% more than they did last Summer.

Taking Spirit for a spin to test the value of the Savers Club and Free Spirit points
I recently flew the first half of a round trip on Spirit Airlines, which gave me a chance to give a few aspects of the Spirit Airlines Free Spirit and Saver$ Club experience a spin, including the discount for booking at the airport vs the Savers Club and both of those as compared against using Spirit Free Spirit points to book. I don’t often think of Spirit or its programs, but this experience left me thinking that I really ought to consider using Spirit more often….while simultaneously teaching me now to get not just low value, but negative value from their points.
Virgin Atlantic devalues Delta, destroying deal
In sadly unsurprising news, Virgin Atlantic has finally done the seeming inevitable and devalued one of its few remaining sweet spots. Thrifty Traveler has spotted that if you’d like to book Delta flights to Europe in business class, those will now require more miles in most cases. That’s not...
