FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Investigators with Fresno Police are working to find out the identity of the baby found dead in a Fresno backyard on Tuesday.

A resident on the 300 block of South Backer Avenue heard her dog barking outside, when she went to go look she found a dead baby lying there.

“This is not something we like to see and so we definitely want to bring justice to the baby, whatever that may be,” said Fresno Police Sgt. Felipe Uribe.

Uribe said the infant does not belong to anyone inside the household. The identity and whereabouts of the parents are unknown.

“We don’t know the cause of the baby’s death, we can’t classify this as a murder yet,” said Sgt. Uribe.

Police closed off several blocks surrounding the crime scene for investigation Tuesday morning.

“We have not tied the baby to any home in the vicinity, so we don’t know if somebody, unfortunately, transported the body from one place to another, so we have to go wide and we have to start kind of working backward,” Uribe explained.

YourCentralValley.com spoke to a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for four decades. In the last couple of years, he says he has seen an increase in gang activity, prompting him and his neighbors to install surveillance cameras.

“We’re talking to neighbors, we know that somebody out there in that neighborhood saw or knows someone who knows something,” Sgt. Uribe said.

Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department.
