FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – It’s not quite the fourth, but fireworks can already be heard across the Central Valley.

Fireworks that fly in the air, dart across the ground, or explode are illegal for private use in California. This includes mortar-style fireworks, roman candles, bottle rockets, firecrackers and all other fireworks that do not bear the “Safe and Sane” seal.

“Illegal fireworks and fireworks used recklessly can easily cause catastrophic fires,” Fresno Fire Chief Billy Alcorn said in a social media post. “They pose a threat to our neighborhoods, our homes, and our loved ones.”

Law enforcement and first responders are asking that people help out their communities by reporting illegal fireworks activity.

Alcorn also says if first responders are responding to fireworks-related incidents, they cannot respond as quickly to other emergencies.

Here is a list of resources to call and report illegal fireworks activity.

    • Fresno : (559) 621-7000
    • Madera : (559) 675-4220
    • Merced : (209) 388-SAFE or use the Merced Connect app
