FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Staff Sergeant Nathan Tomshack served in the U.S. Army for six years. He deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa before being honorably discharged in 2014. While serving overseas, he was involved in several attacks. He now suffers from back and knee injuries, as well as PTSD.

For his dedication to his country, several organizations worked together to award the Central Valley veteran with a mortgage-free home. A groundbreaking ceremony for Sergeant Tomshack’s new home was held on Wednesday.

“It’s life-changing. It’s something me and my wife talked about,” Tomshack said. “Now, we’re free to try to give back some more to the community hopefully.”

Lennar Homes of Central California, Beyond the Barracks, and Operation Finally Home brought the idea to life.

“This is by far the most special home that I’m ever going to have our staff build. It’s for a worthy veteran. It’s for someone who served our country to let us be able to sleep at night, to be able to preserve our freedom,” Jim Sandrini with Lennar Homes said.

The value of the home is at least $550,000. Because Sergeant Tomshack’s injuries require specific soaking protocols, Lennar Homes will add a soaking tub and additional wiring to the back of the home for a hot tub.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Sergeant Tomshack was honored by the City of Fresno in a very big way.

“We, Mayor Jerry Dyer and the members of the Fresno City Council do hereby proclaim Wednesday, July 17th, 2024, to be Staff Sergeant Nathan Tomschack Day in the City of Fresno.”

Sergeant Tomshack now volunteers his free time at Fresno’s Vet Center. He’s also pursuing a master’s degree in therapy so he can help other veterans heal when they return home.
