FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – Fresno-area Congressman Jim Costa issued a statement on Sunday in response to President Joe Biden withdrawing from the 2024 race , describing it as “one of the bravest and most difficult decisions of his career.”

Costa’s statement was issued hours after President Biden made his own announcement about his future. Biden has been battling to stay in the race after his physical and mental acuity were called into question following a prime-time debate in which he struggled to finish sentences, gave confused looks and fumbled through his answers.

“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted to social media.

On Sunday, Congressman Jim Costa recognized the president’s triumphs during his term.

“We need to praise him for his legacy of leadership and long list of accomplishments,” Costa’s statement read.

Costa concluded by looking forward to the Democratic Party coming together in a united front.

“Assuring all Americans and our allies that we are the leaders of the free world and recognize our actions, both at home and abroad, reflect upon our character.”

Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, he later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for November’s election.
