How did SmartAsset come up with its findings?

To find the most affordable places to buy a home in California, SmartAsset analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau and other government sources, considering factors such as closing costs, real estate taxes, homeowners insurance and mortgage rates.

SmartAsset started by looking at all places with a population of 5,000 or more, then calculated the total cost of owning a home, based on average home prices, over a five-year period in each city.

This five-year cost was compared to the median household income in each city to determine affordability, with an emphasis on mortgage payments.

Each city was then given a score from 0 to 100, with the most affordable location scoring 100.

“The most affordable places were those in which total housing costs were smallest compared to the median income in each area,” SmartAsset said.
