Maple Grove Community Garden Blossoms in its First Season
Maple Grove’s brand-new community garden has sprung up in what was an outdoor hockey rink at Donahue North Park. “It is so heartwarming to see all of this. I have wanted a community garden for our city for a while,” said City of Maple Grove Recreation Supervisor Crystal Anderson. “To see it come to fruition and to see how excited everyone was–we had over 100 people sign up for the 40 spots we have, so we do a lottery system–to see how appreciative everyone was to come out and garden was really wonderful to see this year.”

Mississippi River sheens from 30-gallon dam spill
COON RAPIDS, Minn. – Two sheens flowing on the surface of the Mississippi River originated at a dam operated by the Three Rivers Park District in Coon Rapid. A valve malfunctioned on Tuesday and 30 gallons of lubricant spilled, the District confirmed. Although a petroleum product, the lubricant is not harmful to food or drinking water, the District said. The sheens were spotted first on Wednesday morning a couple miles downstream at the State Highway 610 bridge north of the Interstate 94 crossing of the Mississippi.

Union Pacific busy replacing ties
Union Pacific, which owns and operates the railroad running from Montgomery through New Prague, has been working on a tie replacement project along the line to Jordan. “We do that periodically to ensure safe transport of the items we ship,” said Mike Jaixen, senior manager of communications for Union Pacific. “Along with replacing the ties, the crews do ballast work. The ties will be set to the side of the track, and we have a different crew that will come by later and pick up the old ties.”
