CLAY COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — A man is dead and his wife has been hospitalized after he shot her twice and subsequently committed suicide.

Forty-six-year-old Armando Nava, of Fritch, Texas, shot his wife twice before turning the gun on himself on Sunday, July 7, 2024, according to Clay County Sheriff Kirk Horton.

Early Sunday morning at about 2:37 a.m., dispatch received a 911 call from the woman, saying her husband had a gun while the pair was traveling. The call-taker was able to trace the call near U.S. Highway 287 S near the Wilson Overpass and Stephens Ranch Road.

Upon arrival, deputies found a 39-year-old woman with two gunshot wounds and Nava dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Horton said.

According to Horton, the pair was traveling and had pulled over to the side of the highway amid a verbal altercation that turned violent.

Horton said Nava physically assaulted his wife before shooting her twice with a pistol.

Nava then went to the back of the truck and fatally shot himself, Horton said.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation as the incident occurred just within their jurisdiction.

Nava was pronounced dead on-scene, and his wife was taken to United Regional in critical condition.
