Building Habits in our Children
This summer, my kids and I have taken a walk almost every day. Well, I walk and they ride their bike or scooter. I made this as a goal at the beginning of the summer as a way to get them (& me) off of screens and to spend some time together. During this time, they’ve become more brave and more curious. They’re wanting to ride their bikes independently more which can be little scary when you live on one of the busiest streets in town, but with proper supervision, I’ve allowed them to do a little more exploring. This made me think about all the things we try to teach our kids, and how we hope we’re doing it all right. (If that’s even possible.) In this article, I want to share a few habits I’m trying to teach my kids that I hope they’ll carry with them as they continue to grow and become adults.

Things They Forget to Tell You by Dr. Juan Harrison
A few years ago, as a younger man a friend of mine lost her husband in a tragic farm accident. Before Facebook she got tied up as a pen pal with a shyster from another state. He ended up about cleaning her out as she made frequent trips down the hall to get some desperate advice from me. Before all was said and done, he even got away with her late husband’s favorite recliner. Her loneliness left her poorer, sadder, and much wiser. He wasn’t the rich plantation owner he pretended to be.

The Importance of the Ordinary by Dr. Juan Harrison
It’s easy to overlook what we have for what we don’t have. It may simply be that the Devil has got us so busy chasing our tail that we don’t have a moment to be thankful for what we do have. Gratefulness goes a long way toward helping us have peace of mind, something most of us humans find to be somewhat elusive.
