Alabama native becomes first Black, female Episcopal bishop in Mississippi
The new bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi is being formally installed Saturday, and she is first woman and first Black person to hold the post. The Rev. Dorothy Sanders Wells, a native of Mobile, Ala., was elected bishop in February and has been in the leadership role since May. She is being ordained and consecrated by the Most Rev. Michael Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church.

Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival Coming Up
The Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival is taking place on July 25-28 in Mobile. The festival begins with an evening of poetry at Central Presbyterian Church on July 25 at 6 p.m. Poetry contest winners will be announced, and admission is $10. The next day, at 7 p.m. at the Via! Center, a Jazz Gala featuring the Marcus Johnson Summer Jazz Camp Orchestra, the Andrew Ayers Trio and local musicians will be held. Admission is $35. On July 27, beginning at 6 p.m. at Saenger Theatre Mobile, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra and Gino Rosaria will perform. Tickets start at $29.50. The final day will take place at The Elks Lodge at 4 p.m. and feature The Excelsior Band, Bay Carnival and The Jukebox Brass Band. Admission is free.
