Bobby Petrino's three best play calls in Arkansas football's rout over UAPB

LITTLE ROCK — It was a historic performance for the Arkansas football offense in Bobby Petrino 's second debut with the program.

The Razorbacks (1-0) scored touchdowns on all 10 possessions Thursday night in a 70-0 win over UAPB. The rout marked the fifth-highest margin of victory in school history and, according to the ESPN broadcast, no offense in the last 20 years had scored touchdowns on its first 10 drives.

"It happened when Bobby came back," Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said. "The legend is going to continue to grow. Good for him, he deserves it."

On a night filled with offensive success, here are our picks for the three best Arkansas play calls courtesy of Petrino in a dominant win over the Golden Lions.

    The first read-option

Arkansas faced second-and-10 from the UAPB 40-yard line during its first drive of the night when Petrino summoned a read-option between quarterback Taylen Green and running back Ja'Quinden Jackson.

The Hogs already had three carries for 18 yards on the drive, but that production came from only running backs. Green pulled the handoff out of Jackson's belly, fooling the UAPB defense, and scampered through a giant opening for a 32-yard run.

Jackson scored on the next play.

Petrino won't want to run Green into the ground this fall, but mixing in designed carries for his quarterback will be key for the Hogs' success.

Creating space for a wide-open score

Green's first passing touchdown of the season was an easy 9-yard throw to Tyrone Broden, who was the only receiver on the right half of the field for a wide open score.

The other three route runners all flooded the left side, causing confusion for the UAPB defense and creating Broden's opening. The Golden Lions didn't cover the play well, but the scheme forced some confusion, with the UAPB secondary losing track of who was supposed to cover the 6-foot-7 wide receiver.

Green's best throw of the night

The Boise State transfer looked comfortable all preseason rolling to his left, and Green shaded that direction while making a 23-yard touchdown pass to Ty Washington to give the Hogs a 42-0 lead in the second quarter.

But the route was just as good as the throw. Washington appeared to be running flat before planting his left foot and turning upfield on a wheel route.

According to Green, it was a play and concept Arkansas worked tirelessly on this offseason.
