Fulton County murder trial involving child's death set to continue this week

    2024-04-08

WAUSEON — The jury trial of a Wauseon man charged with causing the death of an infant was expected to continue this week in Fulton County Common Pleas Court.

Devon Harris, 29, is charged with murder, an unclassified felony; involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; and two counts of endangering children, second- and third-degree felonies.

The murder charge — returned in an August 2022 Fulton County grand jury indictment — alleges that on Aug. 2, 2022 he injured a three-year-old child, Gemma Thompson, who died two days later, according to Wauseon police. Initially she was taken by rescue personnel to Fulton County Health Center, Wauseon, before being flown by air ambulance to Toledo Hospital.

The four other charges are related to the same incident and conduct involving Thompson. If the jury finds Harris guilty, it only decide if he is guilty of murder or involuntary manslaughter, but not both.

Harris was being held Monday in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio where he has been incarcerated since his arrest on Aug. 8, 2022.
