Are you an SFC student that needs a ride? The college and Uber may have you covered.

Santa Fe College students in urgent situations will now have access to free Uber rides through a program that started earlier this month.

Through a partnership with Uber, Santa Fe College (SFC) students will receive an Uber voucher for two rides within 15 miles of Santa Fe College’s Northwest Campus or its centers. The program was created as part of the Safe Santa Fe initiative, which a news release said is designed to support the on-campus safety of students, guests and employees.

“We’re always looking for ways at Santa Fe College to provide support for our students in a variety of circumstances,” SFC Police Chief Ed Book said. “We believe we are the first college [not including universities] in the nation to have a partnership like this with Uber.”

Book said he spoke with a representative in California and invited Uber to table at the college and provide rideshare safety materials last year.

    How to get the vouchers

Students who need assistance should go to the Student Life office , the Ombuds office or the Police Department , as these locations will provide a QR code to be used in the "wallet" section of the Uber app prior to requesting a ride. After answering a few safety questions, students will immediately be provided with a certain amount of credit that should cover at least two trips.

Eligible students will be identified by college staff on a case-by-case basis; there is no request or application process. Staff can evaluate potential challenges a student may be facing, recognize when students would benefit from the vouchers and determine if timely transportation is needed.

“We have trained staff with vouchers that can be provided to our students in a need where we need to provide them a support to get somewhere, perhaps from a campus to another campus [to] take an exam, and other transportation options just didn’t work at that moment,” Book said. “So, we’re trying it… We’re always looking for ways to provide supports for our students, and so this one we’re excited about."

The program currently has a limited number of Uber vouchers available, but college officials will monitor the need for possible future expansion. Book said the program is currently based on support by Uber and college officials want to see if there is a need and if this program could be valuable for students.

He also reiterated the importance of the Regional Transit System (RTS), which is free for all Santa Fe students and faculty with a college ID. The Uber voucher program is only available to students.

The Uber vouchers can be used only for UberX rides, are non-transferable and cannot be combined with other offers. Offer and terms of the vouchers are subject to change.
