First ever subsistence fishery closure at Port Clarence causes hardship at Teller, Brevig
After experiencing an unprecedented closure of subsistence salmon fishing, the Port Clarence district, including Teller and Brevig Mission, is now open for fishing. The Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game closed the Port Clarence district to set net fishing— excluding Pilgrim River — from June 15 until July 1; then two 48-hour fishing periods per week were opened until Monday, July 15, when subsistence fishing was allowed seven days per week.

Medical student gets firsthand training in Bethel
Stephen Compton, the son of Bethel’s Dr. David Compton, is an Alaska WWAMI medical student. WWAMI stands for “Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho”, and since July 1st, Compton has been training closely with Dr. Megan Young at Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital in Bethel as part the Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP), a month-long elective for WWAMI medical students interested in rural medicine.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Thursday was a brief break between storms for Southcentral Alaska. A new storm pushed across Western Alaska on Thursday. Bethel dealt with record heat this week, and now will see an abrupt shift to rain. Through Thursday afternoon, Bethel has had about a half-inch of rain (0.48″).
AARP is Advocating for Residential Utility Customers
AARP formally intervened in the Chugach Electric Rate Case currently before the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to fight for fair treatment of residential customers. AARP is the only party in this case who is fighting specifically on behalf of residential customers. AARP argued that the way Chugach has proposed to allocate costs and design rates favors commercial customers and significantly shifts costs and higher rate increases to residential customers.
