Ho-Chunk Nation dugout canoe travels Mississippi

LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WKBT) -- The Ho-Chunk Nation set off on a week-long dugout canoe journey down the Mississippi River on Wednesday.

The 2024 HCN Dugout Canoe Journey, now in its third year, aims to reconnect tribal members with their ancestral waterways and ancient canoe technology that served their people for generations.

Paddlers, including tribal members, historians, and local officials, will make their way south to Galena, Illinois.

They'll stop at historic sites, navigate locks and dams, and engage with river communities along the route.
