A Galesburg man has been cited for possession of illegal fireworks after a large cache of them exploded June 29, causing a garage fire that largely destroyed the structure.

According to the Galesburg Police Department , Doug Miller received a citation for illegal possession of fireworks following the incident, in which firefighters were tasked with trying to extinguish a blaze coming out of a garage at his home in the 900 block of Bateman Street while also dealing with exploding fireworks.

According to GPD, the Galesburg Fire Department responded to the scene and found the garage on fire, with the fireworks exploding out of the garage. They discovered that Miller had been storing a large quantity of illegal fireworks, which ignited by accident. The garage had electricity and a natural gas line running to it.

Despite dealing with exploding fireworks shooting at them, the fire department was able to put out the blaze. GPD said that the incident posed "a significant danger" both to firefighters and residents in the neighborhood.

Miller is slated to appear in court for a first appearance on Aug. 8.
