Summer vacation is almost over: So, when does school start in your district?

In a few weeks, bookbags, sweaters, laptops and notebooks will replace beach towels, swimsuits, and tan lines. The summer fun will end, and school will be in session.

While you're taking advantage now of the back-to-school sales for supplies, there's still a good chunk of summer left with about five weeks left of summer vacation. There is still time to squeeze in one last family getaway or a few more beach day trips and plenty of time for the kids to enjoy the great outdoors and play outside all day before their days are filled with classes and homework.

Here is a list of when the first day of school is for the six districts in the greater Gardner area.

Gardner Public Schools

The first school day for grades 1-12 is Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Gardner Public Schools .

Kindergarten orientation at the Gardner Elementary School for children with A to J last names is on Tuesday, Aug. 27, and K to Z the following day, Wednesday, Aug. 28. Both orientation days start at 9:30 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. The Pre-K open house is on Thursday, Sept. 5, at GES from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The first day of kindergarten is Wednesday, Sept. 4. The following week, Monday, Sept. 9, is pre-K students' first day of school.

Ashburnham and Westminster Regional School District

The first day of school for grades 1-12 at the Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District is Monday, Aug. 26. The first day for kindergartners is Wednesday, Aug. 28. Preschool students will start the school year on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School

Orientation for 9th graders is on Wednesday, Aug. 21, and Thursday, Aug. 22. Orientation for new upperclassmen is on Monday, Aug. 26.

The first day of school for grades 9-12 is Wednesday, Aug. 28. Parents' back-to-school night is Thursday, Sept. 12.

Narragansett Regional School District

Narragansett Regional School District 's K-12 students will start the school year on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Pre-K students' first day of school is Thursday, Sept. 5.

There are four days for Pre-K screening: Wednesday, Aug. 28, Thursday, Aug. 29, Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The 5th-grade orientation event at Narragansett Middle School will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the Middle School open house is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Quabbin Regional School District

The first day of school for grades K-12 at Quabbin Regional School District is Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Middle and High school students have their new student orientation on Friday, Aug. 23. The middle school students' orientation starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. Orientation for high school students is from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, 6th graders at the Quabbin Regional Middle High Schoo l have their open house from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Pre-K students will have their first day of school on Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Winchendon Public Schools

The first day of school for grades 1-12 at Winchendon Public Schools is Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Also, on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Memorial Elementary will hold the kindergarten orientation from 6 to 7 p.m. The first day of school for kindergarteners' is Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Thursday, Sept. 5, is the first day of school for pre-k students.
