9 injured, dozens of flights canceled or delayed after fire breaks out at JFK Airport in New York
Nine people suffered minor injuries and dozens of flights are impacted after a small fire broke out at JFK Airport in New York on Wednesday morning.The fire broke out on an escalator in Concourse C and spewed smoke through Terminal 8 around 7:15 a.m.About 960 people were evacuated from the area and taken to another part of the terminal. Nine people were injured -- all with minor smoke inhalation -- and four were taken to the hospital to be checked out.The FDNY ventilated the terminal and it was cleared to reopen.American Airlines, which occupies the terminal, said three American Eagle regional departures were canceled as a result of the fire, out of 89 total American flights scheduled to depart from Kennedy on Wednesday.The airport suggests checking with your carrier before traveling.The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ride to End Cancer Cruises Through Somers
SOMERS, N.Y. - Anyone driving past Somers Middle School and Somers Intermediate School on Sunday, July 21, would believe Somers had been invaded. The field separating the schools was transformed into a mass of tents and a sea of cycles. Over 375 cyclists on the Empire State Ride to End Cancer concluded the first day of a seven-day, 500+ mile adventure from New York City to Niagara Falls that raises funds for cancer research. The riders, many of whom were cancer survivors and supported by an army of volunteers, began the day in Staten Island, ferried to Manhattan and wound their way to Somers. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced that two major tunnels connecting the island to other parts of the city have been and will continue to be partially closed at night in an effort to carry out tests on the 20-ton flood doors that protect them from various storms and hurricanes.
