Garibaldi launches major construction projects to improve accessibility

Major construction projects are underway in the City and Port of Garibaldi to enhance driving, pedestrian, biking and boating experiences. These projects, planned for over a decade, will bring much needed improvements to Garibaldi and Tillamook Bay.

The first project to begin is the Tillamook south jetty repair project. The Army Corps of Engineers owns and maintains both jetties at Tillamook Bay’s entrance. Contractors recently began critical repairs, as trucks hauling huge boulders started arriving the week of May 21. These boulders, many as large as two tons, will be loaded onto a barge in an area north of the Port of Tillamook Bay office. The rocks will then be shipped to an area at Bayocean County Park, where the south jetty repair project will take place.

“Getting the south jetty repairs done is crucial, not only for our boating, and commercial and recreational fishers, but also to emergency management and the U.S. Coast Guard when on rescue missions,” said Michael Saindon, Port manager. “While parking for trucks and boats will be temporarily limited, there is ample overflow parking on the north side of Garibaldi Marina.”

Crabbing and clamming will remain open. To watch the rocks being loaded on the barge, go to the dock directly behind the Port of Garibaldi office, or drive north to Barview Jetty Campground.

In June, the second project of Highway 101 repairs and upgrades through the City of Garibaldi will begin. Oregon Department of Transportation improvements include new pavement, bike lanes, ADA sidewalks, relocated hydrants and pedestrian safety improvements. There will be times when the highway will require one-lane traffic management but will be scheduled during the least traffic hours when possible. In anticipation of this project, the City of Garibaldi is repairing a partially collapsed sewer pipe in Hwy 101 between 6th and 7th streets the week of June 3.

In addition, the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is also working to make improvements to its Depot Plaza, part of the Garibaldi Depot Expansion Project. OCSR improvements include laying a new paved walkway, restoring the historic Garibaldi Telegraph Office, reconstructing a railroad water tower and improving ADA access. The OSCR project’s anticipated completion is March 2025.
