GARLAND, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A mother and her children safely escaped their vehicle and walked half a mile to find help after a rollover crash landed them in a northern Utah canal.
According to Captain Javier Muñoz with the Garland Fire Department , a mother was driving with her two children Thursday afternoon when their vehicle rolled into a canal in Garland.
While the cause of the rollover crash is still under investigation, authorities believe she was run off the road by another driver who clipped her vehicle, sending it rolling into the waterway.
The mother told authorities she doesn’t remember all the details of the vehicle escape as she was focused on saving her children. She said she was able to unbuckle herself and her two children, extract them from the vehicle, and safely exit the canal.

They then walked about half a mile in search of a way to call emergency services, according to Muñoz. Dispatch was contacted around 12:45 p.m. and responded to the family’s location.
The crash victims were all assessed by paramedics and it was determined that they were not seriously hurt and were released at the scene.
Muñoz said hazmat crews are now working on reducing the fuel leakage from the wrecked vehicle as the waterway is used for agricultural purposes. They currently have containment booms set up in the water to collect any fuel escaping from the vehicle.
He says the hazmat efforts could last several days. A tow truck company will also be arriving to remove the vehicle from the canal.
The Garland Fire Department shared photos of the rollover crash on social media, saying the family “escaped serious injuries” thanks to their seat belts. Muñoz reiterated this, saying that wearing seatbelts is the “key” to keeping you and your loved ones safe.
