Charlotte, NC – Sophomore quarterback Grayson Loftis, graduate student wide receiver Jordan Moore, redshirt sophomore quarterback Maalik Murphy, redshirt junior offensive lineman Justin Pickett and redshirt senior safety Jaylen Stinson will represent Duke at the 2024 ACC Football Kickoff, July 22-25, at the Hilton Charlotte Uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Editorial cartoonist Dennis Draughon honored with Green Eyeshade Award
The Green Eyeshade Awards, the nation’s oldest regional journalism contest, recognized Capitol Broadcasting Company’s editorial cartoonist Dennis Draughon for outstanding visual commentary. The Society of Professional Journalists annually honors outstanding work by Southern journalists. Draughon placed third in editorial cartoons, in the Green Eyeshade’s graphic division. In assessing the editorial cartooning entries, judging stressed originality and effectiveness of message. Most recently, Draughon’s work was honored with Editor & Publisher Magazine’s EPPY award for best editorial/political cartoons.

Durham Schools providing more mental health resources for students and families
DURHAM N.C. (WNCN) — Durham Public Schools is investing in students’ mental health ahead of the new school year. The district’s senior executive director of student support services Dr. Laverne Mattocks-Perry says they expected to see more students and families needing mental health assistance coming out of the pandemic but the demand has been even greater than they thought.
Pelicans Guard, Triangle native Trey Murphy III, Durham Parks and Rec host backpack community day
New Orleans Pelicans Guard and Triangle native Trey Murphy III made his way back to Central North Carolina on Saturday.Murphy partnered with the Durham Parks and Recreation Department to host a community Back to School Resource Day at Campus Hills in Durham.The event included a resource fair, backpack and school supplies giveaway, interactive activities, youth haircuts, food, and more.Murphy, who is originally from Durham, participated in leagues across the county through Durham Parks and Recreation, and eventually at Cary Academy High School. In his freshman year of college, Murphy attended Rice University where he set the school's freshman record for three-point field goal percentage. After two seasons at Rice University Murphy transferred to the University of Virginia where he played for one season. He then was picked up in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies who then traded him to the New Orleans Pelicans.Murphy says he attributes his success to his early beginnings and has a passion for youth and finding ways to give back to the community.

North Carolina went 8-5 during the 2023 season. They went 4-4 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. They finished the season on a three-game losing streak. UNC opened the season with six consecutive wins. The good start began in Charlotte, N.C., when they defeated South Carolina (31-17). They then opened at home the following week, defeating Appalachian State (40-34) in double overtime.
