COACHELLA, Calif. (AP) — Small date palm ranch owners in Southern California’s Coachella Valley have been petitioning for permission to host special events ranging from quinceañeras to weddings on their properties. The move aims to authorize a long-standing tradition in the region's predominantly Latino community of holding outdoor events on largely agricultural properties. What makes the venues unique are towering date palms providing a scenic backdrop for celebrations and shade from the desert sun. Many small date ranch owners say the events help them continue to grow the specialty fruit and be contributors to the largest date harvest in the United States. The proposal has received initial approval from county officials.
Suspect Arrested for Multiple Palm Desert Bank Robberies
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has arrested Reese Westenberger, a 59-year-old Anaheim resident, for robbing two banks in Palm Desert. Surveillance footage shows Westenberger at the US Bank on June 26 and Mechanics Bank on July 11. He was seen wearing a ball cap and ponytail. Arrested in Anaheim, Westenberger has been booked into jail in Banning. In both instances, he entered the banks unarmed and escaped with undisclosed amounts of cash.
Burglary Case Suspect Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charges, Gets 2 Years’ Probation
One of two men suspected of carrying out a series of burglaries in Desert Hot Springs was sentenced to two years of probation Thursday after pleading guilty to lesser charges. Judge Melissa Hale sentenced Richard Bates, 58, after the defendant pleaded guilty to felony receiving stolen property and receiving a stolen vehicle charges, according to Thalia Hayden of the Riverside County District Attorney’s office. A burglary charge against Bates was dismissed.

A 21-year-old Mecca resident died Monday after his car collided with a pole in Indio the night before. Indio Police Department spokesman Benjamin Guitron said an accident where a car rolled over was reported around 10:36 p.m. Sunday in front of the Palm Shadow Inn at 80-761 Highway 111, near Youngs Lane.
