The Highland Fire scorched 2,487 acres in Aguanga in 2023, forcing the evacuation of people and animals in its path. From its start Monday, Oct. 30 to full containment eight days later, this fire caused panic and confusion for many residents, necessitating split second decisions about what could be saved and what must be left behind. AYSO presents free cleat exchange in Minor Park
The American Youth Soccer Organization Region 1641 hosted a free cleat exchange Sat., July 13 at Minor Park in Anza. Assistance signing up for the 2024 season was also offered. According to organizers, several young athletes signed up during the free event.A large trunk containing dozens of pairs of colorful cleats were offered to the soccer hopefuls at no cost.AYSO is seeking players and volunteers for the 2024 season. Anza Quilters Club shows off Opportunity Quilt at Anza Days
Several members of the Anza Quilters Club displayed their Opportunity Quilt at a booth during the Anza Days events Saturday, June 29.The non-profit Anza Quilters club is a group of women who come together to share their passion for quilting. Traditionally, they painstakingly create a large quilt annually to raffle off in order to raise funds for charitable community organizations.According to the ladies, the club is selling tickets for the 2024 Opportunity Quilt for $1 for one ticket or 6 tickets for $5."This is our only fundraiser," said Ellen Elmore. "The monies raised go back to the community. You may see us out and about with the quilt. We would appreciate your contribution by purchasing the raffle tickets."The Opportunity Quilt will be raffled off at the Anza Quilters.
Kirk Allen Anderson
Anderson, Kirk Allen Age 69, of Burnsville, MN and Palm Springs, CA, passed away on Apr 8, 2024. He had been in declining health and his family is happy he is now pain-free and at peace. Kirk was born in Barnesville, MN. He grew up in Windom, MN, where his parents owned The Cottonwood County Citizen newspaper and he graduated high school in 1972. Kirk graduated from the University of California in 1985. Kirk married Meri Anderson in 1989. They had their only child, daughter Alyssa, in 1991. The three of them made Burnsville their home, with frequent travel being a priority for the family. Weekends at the lake with extended family, camping, and beach vacations were favorites. On retirement, Kirk and Meri bought a condo in Palm Springs and became snowbirds to escape the Minnesota winters. This, along with a little red Mustang, was a dream come true for them. Kirk was an avid golfer, getting multiple hole-in-ones in his lifetime! Friends and family remember Kirk as fun, loving, unique, intelligent, a little wild at times, but most of all, a great father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Kirk was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Anderson, mother Geraldine (Sparrow) Anderson, and his wife, Meri Anderson (Maribeth Monahan). Kirk is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Anderson, and his siblings, Kim (Terry) Anderson and Robyn (Stan) Kitson. A celebration of life will be held at noon on Sat, Aug 3 at Cottonwood Lake Pavilion in Windom, MN, where Kirk had many fun memories growing up. All who knew him are invited to come and have a happy day on the lake and share stories of Kirk!

Suspected burglar poses as contractor and police officer before arrest in Yucca Valley
After being caught during an alleged burglary, a man lied about being a contractor and a police officer before he was forcibly arrested. On Saturday evening (July 13), at around 7:30 p.m., County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a house in the 7000 block of Palm Ave in Yucca Valley.
