Iowans whose homes were destroyed by flooding or tornadoes can now apply for temporary housing assistance, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Wednesday. The Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Assistance Program is offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Iowa Town Didn’t Get Warning Sirens Ahead of Damaging Tornado
Weather sirens are supposed to warn communities when a tornado is near. But sometimes severe storms form too quickly for them to be used effectively. Residents of an Iowa town learned the hard way this week that the outdoor sirens are not perfect. The National Weather Service's Des Moines office confirmed to the Des Moines Register that it did not issue a tornado warning until five minutes AFTER the twister had touched down in the city of Urbandale. Multiple residents on 80th and 82nd street in Urbandale, where the tornado did some of its worst damage, told the Register that they did not hear sirens ahead of Monday's storm.

Oak Street Health plans to open its new clinic on Euclid Avenue on Friday, expanding access to primary health care services to patients in underserved areas of the community. DES MOINES, Iowa — The recently opened Beacon Village acts as both an affordable housing option and a place for women in crises to heal. The facility located at the old Village Inn Motel off of East Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street in Des Moines has 32 units and is a place designed specifically for women who struggled with addiction and formerly incarcerated women. In order to live there, residents must be employed, single without kids and at least six months sober.
