July Senior Dinner features an Independence Day theme
GLADBROOK – The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted the July Senior Dinner decorating with a 4th of July theme. Rev. John Granchie gave a prayer before the meal. All enjoyed a turkey dinner with homemade cream puffs for dessert. Sue Koster and Claire Handorf performed a skit entitled ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’ Claire was a TV moderator and interviewed Francis Scott Key who wrote the National Anthem; Francis Bellamy who wrote the “Pledge to the Flag;” and Bessy Ross who made the first official United States flag. The program was both educational and entertaining. The group sang Happy Birthday to Dorothy Wiese who was celebrating her 97th birthday. There is no Senior Dinner in August. The Sept. dinner will be hosted by the Chapel Church on Sept. 13 at the Memorial Building. Call Jeanne for reservations.
Coach Chuck Neubauer’s memorabilia returns to Gladbrook
GLADBROOK – The Gladbrook Museum was fortunate to receive recently a little bit of memorabilia that harkens back to the heydays of the Gladbrook school community. On July 8, Glen and Carol Neubauer of Westminster, Colo. set up an appointment to meet Gladbrook Museum volunteer Jeanne Paustian at the museum. Glen is the son of former Gladbrook High School girls’ basketball coach, the late Chuck Neubauer who passed away in 2002. Coach Neubauer began coaching in Gladbrook during the 1958-59 school year, leading the Panthers to two State Tournament Championships in 1959 and 1960. Glen was just four years old when his family moved to Gladbrook.

The early entry list for the HB Concerts Pomenade Pavillion 100 at Toldeo Speedway on Friday, July 26th with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by Chevrolet Performance features some of the top teams in the midwest, plus drivers who have waited 15 years for the chance to return to Toledo Speedway with their Pro Late Model program. After a mid-summer break, the JEGS Tour is gearing up for a big push into the run for a Championship at Winchester Speedway in October.

Motorcycle Ride to Honor Mollie Tibbetts This Weekend
(Brooklyn, IA) -- Today marks six years since the disappearance of Mollie Tibbetts. She was a student at the University of Iowa, and never returned. A man has been convicted of murder in the case. Mollie's Ride, a parade of motorcycles, will roll through several Iowa communities to honor her memory on Saturday. It starts and ends in Brooklyn, with stops along the way in Garwin, Lincoln, Marshalltown, Melbourne and Gilman. The proceeds from the registration fee will go to Tibbetts' memorial fund, which goes to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

Big animals need a big property, and ARL of Iowa just purchased a 21-acre ranch
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is expanding its capacity to care for barnyard animals with the purchase of a 21-acre ranch in north central Polk County. The new facilities include three grazing pastures, a barn with horse stalls, both an indoor and outdoor arena and a smaller structure for goats, chickens and other small barn animals. The purchase cost $2 million, with half the funds coming from the ARL Foundation. A donation campaign will also help raise funds to refurbish the facilities before animals move in.

Fareway still planning second Waukee store, but hasn't set a construction date
Fareway still plans to build a second location in northwest Waukee but the supermarket chain does not yet know when. Fareway currently has a store at 200 S.E. Laurel St. in Waukee.
