Badcock Home Furniture & More, a longtime staple in Florida and beyond, is shutting down all its stores, including multiple locations in the Big Bend.

The announcement came as a shock to both customers and employees. The company, founded in Mulberry in 1904, has been a familiar name in Florida for generations. Its Tallahassee store, which opened in 1970, was once a local shopping destination.

In a Facebook post, Badcock wrote:

All Badcock stores are closing! Up to 50% merchandise while supplies last.

Why the closure? Tallahassee Democrat reported that financial struggles at the parent company, Conn’s HomePlus, are largely to blame. After acquiring Badcock in late 2023, Conn’s has faced mounting financial challenges, including a significant drop in share price and a net loss of nearly $77 million.

The decision to close all stores, including those in Florida, is part of a broader cost-cutting strategy by Conn’s. The company is also shuttering dozens of its own locations across the country.

A resident named Dianna Dianna shared on Facebook:

Sad, I knew it wouldn't last when Conn's HomePlus bought them. Prices went up quality went down

Badcock’s closure adds to a growing list of retail and restaurant shutdowns this year. Economic headwinds and changing consumer habits have forced many businesses to close their doors.

For several Florida residents who relied on Badcock for furniture and home goods, the closure marks the end of an era. Going-out-of-business sales are currently underway, offering customers a final chance to shop at the iconic retailer.
