Lots of Lox Deli in Miami drew attention recently after the restaurant failed to meet inspection standards and was cited for a notable 50 violations during a Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation visit.

The popular Miami-Dade County breakfast and brunch spot, located at 14995 South Dixie Hwy, was not closed but required a follow-up inspection.

This is What Happened During The Inspection

The initial September 4 inspection found eight high-priority, six intermediate, and 36 basic violations. A callback on the same day saw the infractions reduced to 17, while another follow-up the next day found 13 violations, bringing the establishment into compliance.

This New York-style deli, open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., has a 4.5-star rating from 487 Google reviews, but the diner clearly has some work to do to keep the faith of its loyal customers.

During the inspection, state authorities noted live flying insects in the kitchen, raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat items, and nonfood-grade containers used for food storage.

Employee hand-washing practices were also cited. State records also noted that Lots of Lox Deli lacked suitable date marking for ready-to-eat foods and had soiled food-contact surfaces.

Other notable violations included trash collection on equipment and missing ceiling tiles. Personal items were found in food preparation areas, and maintenance tools were stored incorrectly.

The Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation reminds patrons that each inspection is a snapshot of conditions at that time.

    High Priority Violations:

    • Live, small flying insects in kitchen and food preparation areas
    • Raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food
    • Nonfood-grade containers used for food storage
    • Employee handled soiled equipment and then engaged in food preparation without washing hands
    • Substances labeled for household use only were present in the establishment
    • Unhealthy substances incorrectly stored
    • Dented cans present
    • Nonfood-grade bags used in direct contact with food
