What appears to be A routine gun cleaning session turned deadly in Marion County after one woman died and a deputy is behind bars. Leslie Boileau, a former Marion County deputy, accidentally shot his girlfriend in the head while cleaning guns, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Ocala police responded to a 911 call in the Highlands area, where Boileau, 32, reported the accidental shooting. WESH 2 News reported that the call in question "came in before 11:00 p.m." Thursday night. WESH 2 News also reported that Boileau admitted that he and his girlfriend, Polina Wright, were drinking at a restaurant before they went home.

The incident reportedly occurred as Boileau was demonstrating the use of his rifle during a gun cleaning session with his girlfriend.

"I was cleaning the guns. We were pointing them at each other,” Boileau told a police officer during questioning, according to the arrest affidavit reported by Spectrum News.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods expressed condolences, stating, "We are heartbroken for the family and friends of the victim."

He emphasized that while most law enforcement officers perform their duties admirably, this mournful event impacts the entire law enforcement community.

Boileau, an eight-year veteran of the department, has been charged with manslaughter and terminated from his position. He is currently being held without bond at the Marion County Jail as the investigation continues.

"We are deeply saddened....Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," Police Chief Mike Balken said.

"The Ocala Police Department is working with the State Attorney’s office to ensure justice is served."
