Volusia County, Florida, residents offered sandbags to prepare for potential Hurricane Helene

In a proactive response to the looming issues of Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, soon to be Hurricane Helene, Volusia County residents are taking decisive action to safeguard their homes and properties. The Florida community is mobilizing as heavy rainfall and potential flooding is imminent.

Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 41 counties, underpinning the gravity of the situation. Residents within the storm's projected path are being strongly advised to commence immediate preparations to protect life and property.

In a coordinated effort to assist locals, three cities in Volusia County are offering sandbags to help mitigate potential flood damage. Each household is eligible to receive up to 10 sandbags, with proof of local residency required.

Edgewater residents can access sandbags 24/7 at two locations: the Southwest Corner of Hibiscus Drive and 26th Street, and Mango Tree Lake at 901 Mango Tree Drive. Residents are reminded to bring their own shovels and bags.

Orange City is distributing sandbags on September 24 and 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Waggin' Trail Dog Park. Proof of residency is mandatory for collection.

In DeLand, distribution is scheduled for September 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Melching Field. While sand and bags will be provided, residents are asked to bring their own shovels. ID verification for proof of residence is required, with a limit of 10 bags per household.
