Shorty's BBQ in Davie, Florida, received 11 violations during a routine inspection by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation on September 30, 2024. The Broward County barbecue joint, known for its pit-cooked meats, was cited for 5 high-priority, 2 intermediate, and 4 basic violations.

The restaurant, located at 5989 South University Dr, was not ordered to close but requires a follow-up inspection to address the issues.

This is What Happened During The Inspection

Among the high-priority violations, inspectors found an employee failing to wash hands before putting on gloves, raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in a freezer, and time/temperature management problems for safety foods.

The inspector's note revealed time marking issues were reported for baby back ribs and roasted chicken at the cook line. In the kitchen hot box, chopped portioned brisket was held below the required degrees for hot holding.

Intermediate violations included the absence of a measuring device for utensil surface temperature in the dishmachine and no probe thermometer for food products.

Basic violations ranged from damaged ceiling tiles to stored food left without proper covering in the walk-in cooler.

Shorty's BBQ maintains a 4.3-star rating from 1,880 Google reviews.

A recent diner, Kristine Patten, praised the baby back ribs and atmosphere but noted the fried okra needed improvement.

Stopped in for lunch and got the full rack of baby back ribs with fries and coleslaw. I also got the fried okra. Everything was good, but the okra needed more breading and a bit longer cook time. Thoroughly enjoyable!

    High Priority Violations:

    • Employee failed to wash hands before putting on gloves
    • Raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in freezer
    • Time/temperature management issues for safety foods
    • Missing time marks on baby back ribs and roasted chicken
    • Vacuum breaker missing at mop sink tap
