Makeb's Bagels in West Palm Beach was cited for 13 violations during a routine inspection by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation on October 7, 2024. The popular bagel shop, located at 4352 Okeechobee Blvd in Palm Beach County, received 9 high-priority, 2 intermediate, and 2 basic violations.

The inspection revealed numerous food safety infractions, primarily related to unsuitable food storage and temperature management.

Makeb's Bagels, a well-reviewed spot with a 4.3-star rating from over 620 Google opinions, remained open but required a follow-up evaluation to address these issues adequately. A subsequent inspection on October 8 successfully revealed only one basic violation, clearing the way for a safer dining environment.

A recent customer named Katie Brocious shared on Google reviews after a takeout:

The food is good and I’m really picky with sliced meat and they have good bagel sandwiches with good deli meat. The only thing I would say is that the bagels could be slightly better but that’s just because I like New York bagels, and the service is quick.

This is What Happened During The Inspection

State records indicated that high-priority violations included raw animal foods stored above ready-to-eat items in coolers and several safety-related foods held at temperatures surpassing recommended levels.

Other high-priority violations included employees handling food without proper handwashing and a cashier with a wound working without suitable hand protection. A stop sale was also issued for an item that had surpassed its 7-day eating limit.

A follow-up inspection on October 8, 2024, found just one remaining basic violation, allowing the restaurant to meet inspection standards.

    High Priority Violations:

    • Employee began preparing food without washing hands.
    • Employee cracked raw shell eggs and handled ready-to-eat food without washing hands.
    • Employee with a wound on the finger handled food without proper covering.
    • Raw animal food was incorrectly stored over ready-to-eat food.
    • Ready-to-eat food not consumed within 7 days after opening.
    • Stop Sale issued due to temperature misuse of time/temperature management for safety food.
    • Time/temperature management for food held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Hot held food at less than 135 degrees Fahrenheit.
