Bob Evans, a beloved family diner in The Villages, encountered some bumps during a recent Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation inspection. The eatery, known for its hearty breakfast, lunch and comfort food, received 7 violations on October 3, 2024, including 4 high-priority issues, state records revealed.

This is What Happened During Inspection

The Sumter County, located at 360 Colony Blvd in Colony Plaza, received a warning and was required to schedule a follow-up inspection. While the establishment wasn't ordered to close, the findings highlighted areas needing immediate attention.

High-priority violations included an employee drying hands on an apron instead of properly washing them and the presence of small flying insects in the kitchen area. To be specific, the inspectors noted 15 live flies in the dish area.

Meanwhile, incorrectly dated ready-to-eat food and a stop sale was issued for reheated green beans that surpassed the safe storage period.

Intermediate and basic violations ranged from food safety knowledge gaps to dirty non-food contact surfaces. The inspector noted issues with cleanliness in areas related to the soda machine and reach-in coolers.

    The Follow-up Inspection

On a positive note, Bob Evans' management showed a willingness to address concerns on-site. They took corrective actions during the inspection, including discarding incorrectly handled food and cleaning dirty areas.

A follow-up inspection on October 7, 2024, showed improvement, with the restaurant meeting most inspection standards. However, one high-priority violation remained, with extended time granted for correction.

For locals keeping tabs on their favorite breakfast spot, Bob Evans at Colony Plaza in The Villages is working to resolve these issues. The restaurant maintains its 4.0-star rating from 1,166 Google reviews, suggesting that diners enjoy their meals despite these recent challenges.

Colleen S, a local guide and recent customer, shared on Google reviews:

"Ordered online, food to go, dinner for 2. Order was hot and tasty. Good amount of food for the money. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Location is clean and appears well maintained."

    High Priority Violations:

    • Employee dried hands incorrectly after washing
    • Live, small flying insects in kitchen area
    • Ready-to-eat food marked with date surpassing 7 days
    • Stop Sale issued due to unhealthy food condition

    Intermediate:

    • Lack of knowledge about safety food by the person in charge

    Basic:

    • Dirty non-food contact surfaces
    • Buildup of dirt in reach-in coolers

NOTE: It's important to note that inspection reports provide a snapshot of conditions at the time of inspection. Diners are encouraged to check the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation website for the most current information.
