H2GO reports two untreated wastewater discharges, one bypass of untreated wastewater
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Brunswick Regional Water & Sewer H2GO reported two overflow events and one bypass event of untreated wastewater on Aug. 8. 7,650 gallons overflowed at a manhole along Lanvale Road south of King Road in Leland and flowed to a drainage feature tributary to Sturgeon Creek. Crews discovered the overflow while responding to a lift station high-level alarm.
For the first time in its history, Duke University will offer a Cherokee language course
For the first time ever this fall, Duke University will offer a new online Cherokee language course series. It's open to all students, and will count toward a full language college credit to graduate. Courtney Lewis, the university’s inaugural director for the Native American Studies Initiative, said this will also be the first time that Duke students will get to learn an American Indian language.
New Leaders In Durham Public Schools For 2024-25 School Year
DURHAM, NC – Five new leaders are in Durham Public Schools (DPS) for the 2024-25 school year. The new leaders, named by the DPS Board of Education, are:. Dr. Vanessa Alford has been tapped to lead C.C. Spaulding Elementary. She currently serves as principal at Merrick-Moore Elementary. She has extensive experience as an educational leader, having served as a principal in Cumberland County Schools and Durham Public Schools and as an assistant principal in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Cumberland County Schools. She also served as a school transformation coach in DPS, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and the South Carolina State Department of Education. Her background includes school turnaround, school leadership, teacher development, curriculum and instruction, leadership coaching, and building student agency. She received her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fayetteville State University.

Groundbreaking ceremony held for Durham affordable housing option, Commerce Street Apartments
Ground has officially been broken at a site for new affordable housing in the Bull City.Adrianne Todman, the acting secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, was in Durham today for the groundbreaking ceremony.She was joined by US representative Valerie Foushee and Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams to celebrate this phase of adding affordable housing to the City of Durham.The federal government provided $40 million to help with construction.They will be called Commerce Street Apartments.The new apartments will offer 172 mixed-income apartment homes in two four-story buildings.Some units will be reserved for seniors while others will be public housing replacement units and serve households with incomes below 60% of Area Median Income.

Class of 2025 Rutgers linebacker commit Isaiah Deloatch of Hillside High School (Durham, N.C.) is just a fall season away from his arrival at Rutgers.
