Looking for something to do this weekend: Little Theater of Gastonia to show 'Sister Act'

The Little Theater of Gastonia's last show of the season will be Sister Act, a play about a woman who hides in a convent after witnessing a murder.

The show is based on the 1992 film that starred Whoopi Goldberg. The story is centered around Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring singer who witnesses her boyfriend killing someone and goes into hiding. The musical features music by composer Alan Menken, and the original production was nominated for five Tony awards.

"She gets hidden by the police in a convent with a bunch of nuns," director Shane Elks said. "This convent is a convent that is about to be closed, and Deloris starts to lead the choir, and they become like this show choir of nuns."

"The whole show itself is about finding your light and your spirit, and spreading it and using your joy to help other people find their joy. And of course, everybody has their own journey throughout the show itself, and it's just a lot of fun," Elks added.

In the Little Theater's production, Delores is played by 17-year-old Kara Holt.

"She has a great voice and awesome stage presence, and I am very excited to be able to showcase our talent, and we have a lot of new talent and a lot of veterans on the stage mix, which is always what makes for a great show," Elks said.

The production opens on Friday July 19, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20, is the theater's "pay what you can night:" viewers can pay a minimum of $1 for a ticket to the show. On Sunday, there will be a 3 p.m. matinee show.

For regular shows, tickets can be purchased on the theater's website or at the door, but on Saturday, people who buy tickets for the "pay what you can night" must buy them at the door.
