Hikers seriously injured after falling from waterfall in the Smokies

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials are reminding visitors not to climb rocks near waterfalls after two hikers fell and were seriously injured on Wednesday.

Rangers responded to Cataract Falls Wednesday afternoon where the two hikers were seriously injured by a fall.

They were transported from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to an area hospital by helicopter.

Cataract Falls is a 25-foot natural waterfall located roughly 10-15 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg.

“Visitors to the Smokies are reminded to stay on the trail, not climb rocks near waterfalls, and use extreme caution when walking along river and creekbanks,” a park spokesperson wrote.

Personnel from Gatlinburg Fire and Rescue, the National Park Service Preventative Search and Rescue team and other staff members responded to the area.
