This story has been updated JANESVILLE — Ann Roe has beaten Cathy Myers in the Democratic primary for Wisconsin State Assembly District 44.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the residents of the 44th District, and everyone who welcomed me at their doors for meaningful conversations,” Roe said in a statement late Tuesday night. “Your overwhelming support and engagement have truly inspired me. I’m ecstatic to bring that same energy into November. Let’s win!”

Myers also released a statement, early Wednesday morning.

“Our focus when we got into this race was to personally contact every primary voter in the district that we could. We put a lot into this race…a lot of miles, literally, a lot of phone calls, contacts, conversations,” Myers said. “We wanted to learn more about the people we hoped to serve and to talk to them about the importance of public education, workers’ rights, and women’s reproductive healthcare. We did that; we certainly put in the work.”

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we were hoping for, but I believe in this process. Democracy must be competitive for it to thrive. I called Ann Roe a few minutes ago to congratulate her on her victory and give my support to her campaign. Let’s all make sure we are there for her, and continue our pledge to Democracy.”

The two Janesville Democrats were competing Tuesday to advance to the Nov. 5 general election against Republican Bruce Danielson, a lifelong Janesville resident and Janesville police officer.

The seat is being vacated in November by current State Rep. Sue Conley, of Janesville.

The race was called about 11:45 p.m Tuesday. With all precincts reporting, Roe took 54.3% of the vote, or 3,771 votes, to 45.6% for Myers, or 3,170 votes.

Roe had been ahead throughout the evening as returns came in. As of 10:45 p.m., with 8 of 34 precincts, or 24% of the votes tabulated, Roe was leading 59% to Myers’ 44.8%.

District 44 includes most of the city of Janesville, the village of Footville and rural areas stretching northwest out of Janesville to the Dane-Rock County line.

Myers is a retired public school teacher and current Janesville School Board member. Roe has taught part-time at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for more than 25 years. Prior to that, she was the executive director of the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra.

    Rock County voter turnout

In release early Wednesday morning, Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson said

23% of the voters — or 29,615 — of the approximate 128,143 eligible voters in Rock County headed to the polls or voted absentee in the August Partisan Primary.

“Voting was steady, slower in some locations and busier in others,” the release said.

The Rock County Board of Canvass will meet to certify the results on Monday, August 19, at 9 a.m.

“Many thanks to the clerks, staff and poll workers. They make election day happen,” the release said.
