CHICAGO– “A Bold Vision for America’s future” was Tuesday’s theme at the Democratic National Convention.

The headlining speakers were former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

Sanders spoke about needing to get control of corporate monopolies that are denying money for hard working people.

Ken Stribling, a retired Teamster from Milwaukee Local 200 spoke at the convention about protecting pension benefits. He shared that his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

“For six years we fought hard and finally we had a breakthrough,” he said. “After 50 day in office the Biden Harris Administration passed the American Rescue Plan including the Butch Lewis Act to save pensions and secure retirement. They got it done without one single Republican vote. They saved over 1 million pensions including 33,000 from Wisconsin.”

Shawn Reets, a Rock County Delegate said that he was excited to hear from a teamster like Stribling.

“The Trump administration does not care one bit about our hard earned pensions that we have dedicated through decades of hard work. In fact he wanted those pensions to fail,” he said. “It wasn’t until we fought back and passed legislation like the Butch Lewis act to save multi-employer pension plans--so millions of Americans can still retire with dignity.”

Among the sea of people, signs were posted showing where each of the states delegates were sitting. Most of the state delegate wore a color or specific things from that state such as Hawaii wearing leis and Kansas delegates wearing red jerseys that read “Kansas Democrats for Harris”-- and of course Wisconsin delegates with their cheese heads.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers sat amongst the crowd of cheese heads as he patiently waited for his own cheese head to wear.

Evers told the Gazette Tuesday night that he was so happy to be in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention.

“It has been an amazing experience, everyone has been so kind and on time, mostly,” he said Tuesday night.

He said that one of his big takeaways from the two nights he’s been at the convention is the energy and excitement.

“The energy for this election and these two candidates, across the country and especially in Wisconsin is incredible,” he said.

    The roll call vote

The official vote was casted on Aug. 5 for Kamala Harris and Vice President Tim Walz. However they did a symbolic vote while a DJ played songs from the state like “Empire State of Mind” for New York and “Jump Around” for Wisconsin.

Stars like Lil Jon, for Georgia, Sean Astin, for Indiana and Eva Longoria for Texas came and supported their home states.

Evers during the roll call vote said he was “jazzed as hell” to be at the convention. He was so excited that he stumbled on his words, finally he was able to get out that Wisconsin delegates voted for Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for the United States President.
