Since 1992, high school students from Craig and Parker High Schools in Janesville have had a unique opportunity to dive into the world of construction through the South Central Wisconsin Builders Association (SCWBA)’s Student Build program. This hands-on initiative is the cornerstone of the schools’ advanced construction classes, where students spend three hours each day on an active build site, transforming a bare lot into a fully finished home by the end of the school year.

These students, enrolled in the Advanced Construction class, take on every aspect of the building process. From initial planning and design to laying the foundation, installing framing, and setting up electrical and plumbing systems, they are fully immersed in the construction experience. Under the guidance of skilled professionals, they learn to erect walls, install doorways, floors, and roofs, and even handle the finishing touches such as painting, cabinetry, and fixtures. This immersive experience not only gives students a comprehensive understanding of construction but also equips them with the skills and confidence needed for careers in the industry.

At the helm of this ambitious program is Joe Kruser, the Co-Chair of SCWBA’s education committee and the owner/operator of A+ Installation. “It’s quite the operation,” says Kruser. “The students drive themselves to the job site, and I work with them on everything. We start from the very basics—how to use each tool and how to properly complete each task. I show them what needs to be done, and they do the work. This year, we’ll have about 30 students.”

Kruser emphasizes the long-term benefits of the program. “It’s great to see how many students go on to have successful careers after being a part of the Student Build program. It really gives them a leg-up into a lot of industries—not just general contracting and construction, but also planning, engineering, plumbing, electrical work, painting, finishing, roofing, and more. In fact, the general contractor for the upcoming 2024-2025 Student Build is a past student. Brian Post was once in this program, and now he owns and operates Post Builders.”

Upon completion, the Student Build homes are sold, and a portion of the proceeds is reinvested into SCWBA’s scholarship program. This program is designed to support local students as they embark on careers in the construction industry. SCWBA President Tess Dongarra explains, “The SCWBA Scholarship Program has two tiers: Academic and Direct-to-Workforce. The academic tier helps cover education costs for students pursuing higher education or training after high school. The Direct-to-Workforce tier is for students who want to go straight into a job, providing funds for things like tools and equipment, required certifications and test fees, or even a good pair of work boots.”

Dongarra further notes the program’s local focus: “Anybody in Rock or Green counties can apply for our scholarship program. We look at a few key factors for each applicant: Are they going into construction or a related industry? Are they planning to work locally here in Rock or Green Counties? And, are they going to be working for or with a current SCWBA member? The whole idea is to promote good quality jobs here in our community. Over the years, we’ve helped hundreds of young adults get started in very strong careers.”

The Student Build program is more than just a class—it’s a gateway to real-world experience and opportunity. By working on actual construction projects, students gain practical knowledge and hands-on skills that are invaluable in the job market. This experience not only boosts their resumes but also provides them with a clear understanding of the work involved in the construction industry, opening doors to a wide range of career paths. For many, this program is the first step towards a fulfilling and lucrative career in a high-demand field.

Moreover, the impact of the Student Build program extends far beyond the students themselves. By fostering a skilled workforce within the community, the program helps create jobs and supports local businesses. As students transition into professional roles, they contribute to the growth of the local economy, ensuring that quality jobs remain within the area. This cycle of education, employment, and economic development is a win-win for everyone, making the SCWBA Student Build program a vital asset to the community.
