JANESVILLE — The United Way Blackhawk Region will kick off its season of caring with the annual Day of Caring on Sept. 11.

This year will have something new in a “Grab and Go” breakfast which Day of Caring volunteers can pick up at Kerry Inc. at 3400 Millington Road, Beloit. Volunteers can pick up Grab and Go Breakfasts and Day of Caring T-shirts on Sept. 10.

United Way Blackhawk Region Acting President and CEO Denise Peters-Kauihou said in an email, in this leadership transition year, there will not be a traditional campaign kick-off event that usually accompanies the Day of Caring.

“We look forward to returning to in-person in 2025,” she stated in an email.

Peters-Kauihou has been serving as acting United Way president since former president and CEO Mary Fanning-Penny announced her resignation in March. Peters-Kauihou said the search for a new leader of the United Way Blackhawk Region is continuing.

United Way Blackhawk Region provides community grants and resources to 28 human services programs at 15 nonprofit agencies in Rock County, Wisconsin and northern Winnebago County, Illinois. United Way seeks to promote health, education and financial stability for every person in every community.

During the Day of Caring, volunteer teams are sent out into the region to complete service projects at local schools, parks and nonprofit agencies. Projects have included landscape work, painting touch-ups and general cleaning of grounds and facilities.

The Day of Caring will be held from 10 a.m. — 1 p.m. when volunteers will fan out in Beloit, Janesville and the area to complete projects at non-profit agencies.

The kick-off event normally is a time when the campaign organizers are introduced and information about pace-setter donors is shared.

The United Way Blackhawk Region also is looking for a new home since it sold its former office building in Janesville. United Way officials previously have said they are looking for a location that would be more centrally located between Beloit and Janesville.
