    Walworth County hosting clean sweep recycling events

    ELKHORN — Walworth County will host residential clean sweep recycling events on Friday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 5, at Walworth County Public Works, W4097, County NN, Elkhorn. No registration is required.

    The clean sweep program safely collects and disposes of waste through a licensed facility.

    On Oct. 4 from 3:30-5:30 p.m., residents may dispose of household hazardous waste. Acceptable hazardous waste products arethose labeled caustic, acid, flammable, danger, warning or poison. Examples include oil and lead-based paints, pesticides and herbicides, adhesives, old fuel, fluoresent bulbs, mercury thermometers, thermostats, furniture strippers, drain cleaners, antifreeze, brake fluid and motor oil. Items should be in their original containers, if possible. A full list of acceptable items is at co.walworth.wi.us/1059/household-hazardous-waste-guides.

    On Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to noon, residents may dispose of household waste and electronics, TVs and appliances.

    Household hazardous waste disposal is free. All electronics and computers can be recycled for free. The following items can be recycled for a fee, cash only. All TVs are $10 each. Computer monitors are $5 each. Mini fridges, small air conditioning units and dehumidifiers are $5 each. Refrigerators and freezers are $10 each. All other appliances are free.

    The clean sweep has served the residents of Walworth County since 1992. The annual program has kept waste out of landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, the environment and groundwater. It is sponsored by the Walworth County Public Works Department and partially funded by the town of Darien, Mallard Ridge Landfill Fund, donations and a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture and Trade and Consumer Protection.
