JANESVILLE -- A fire Monday evening extensively damaged a Janesville apartment in the 1600 block of Randall Avenue.

According to a release, Janesville firefighters responded around 5:15 p.m. Monday to the 96 East Apartments at 1601 Randall Ave. Building residents had been instructed by dispatchers to pull the fire alarm "and many residents had evacuated prior to units arriving on the scene," the release said.

Janesville police officers assisted with evacuating the rest of the building.

The fire, confined to a single apartment, was quickly extinguished. Damage to that apartment was extensive, the release said.

No one was injured. Residents of the damaged apartment have family to stay with temporarily.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
